The manual describes how I can add filters to specific pairs, but as far as I can tell there isn't a way to add a global filter, which would determine the autopairing behavior of all pairs, before any pair specific filters are run. I'm marginally competent at elisp so if you give me a rough sketch of what would need to be modified I'd be happy to try and implement it :)

This exists but is deprecated. Can you describe some scenario where this would be useful?

The option is called sp-autoinsert-inhibit-functions

I just want to add a rule that says something like "never try to autopair if I'm in the middle of a word (i.e. there's anything besides whitespace under the point)", and it seems like a hassle to have to define each pair individually with sp-pair and add this to each one when I'm otherwise perfectly happy with the default configuration.
