Enable Classic ASP, Server-Side Includes, and ASP.NET

In IIS 7.0 and 7.5, the classic version of ASP is not installed by default. Because of this, you might see HTTP 404 errors when you try to use Bolt, or you might see the source code for Bolt displayed in your browser window. Both of these error conditions are created when configuration settings that are used to define the environment for classic ASP are not installed.

To configure Bolt on your Web server, you must install the ASP module using the following steps for your version of Windows:

  • Installing Classic ASP on Windows 7 Client
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Programs and Features, and then click Turn Windows Features on or off.
  3. Expand Internet Information Services, then World Wide Web Services, then Application Development Features.
  4. Select the ASP, Server Side Includes, and ASP.NET features.
  5. Click OK.
  • Installing Classic ASP on Windows Server 2008 R2
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
  2. In the Server Manager hierarchy pane, expand Roles, and then click Web Server (IIS).
  3. In the Web Server (IIS) pane, scroll to the Role Services section, and then click Add Role Services.
  4. On the Select Role Services page of the Add Role Services Wizard, make sure you have ASP and Server Side Includes, ASP.NET, and IIS 6 Management Compatibility selected.
  5. If the Add Role Services required by ASP dialog box appears, click Add Required Role Services. (This page appears only if you have not already installed the ISAPI Extensions role service on your server.)
  6. On the Select Role Services page, click Next.
  7. On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.
  8. On the Results page, click Close.

Create a Application Pool

You need to run each of your Dovetail web applications in their own Application Pool.

  1. To open IIS Manager, select Start - type IIS, and select Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
  2. Click on your computer host name to expand the top-level node.
  3. Click on Application Pools
  4. Right-click on Application Pools and choose Add Application Pool
  5. Enter a name, such as DovetailBolt_AppPool
  6. Set the Managed Pipeline Mode to Classic
  7. Set the .NET Framework Version to version 2. If version 2 is not available, select version 3.5.
  8. If you are running a 64bit operating system you will need to Enable 32-Bit Applications for the Application Pool. Click on Advanced Settings… Set Enable 32-Bit Applications to True. Note that his is not the recommendation configuration.

Create the web application(s)

  1. To open IIS Manager, select Start - type IIS, and select Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
  2. Click on your computer host name to expand the top-level node.
  3. Right-click Default Web Site and select Add Application
  4. In the Alias text box, type a short name (alias) for the directory into which the Dovetail Bolt product was installed (i.e. Bolt). The alias is what users see as part of the URL path when they are browsing to the Dovetail Bolt web application (for example, http://www.MyCompany.com/).
  5. Enter the path, or browse to the directory which contains the Dovetail Bolt web application files (the pages folder under the installation directory).
  6. Select the Application Pool that you created earlier
  7. Select OK.
  8. Close the ISM.

Enable Parent Paths

Parent Paths need to be enabled when an asp page includes a script with a path containing a ".." An example would be:

Dovetail Bolt does use parent paths.

  1. Navigate to your web application in IIS Manager.
  2. Click on ASP.
  3. Set Enable Parent Paths to True.
  4. Click on Apply.

Send Script Errors To The Browser

When you try to browse your web application you may run into this message telling you... "Something went going wrong but sorry I won't tell you what." That error looks like this:"

An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator.
If you are the system administrator please click here to find out more about this error.

To see the actual error, you can configure the application to send errors to the browser. This is helpful when debugging a problem.

  1. Navigate to your web application in IIS Manager.
  2. Click on ASP.
  3. Expand the Debugging section
  4. Set Send Errors to Browser to True.
  5. Click on Apply.
