After running ISIS8.3.0's spiceinit with shape and model options, applying ale.util.generate_kernels_from_cube to the output cube gives a list of kernel paths other than the DSK's full path.

hmmmm, interesting, so the original intended behavior was to generate a MK for something for instrument orientations and states, not the shape model. So the current implementation does not check the shapemodel. Although it seems reasonable to check the shapemodel to see if it is a DSK (check the extension, maybe verify it with a spice call) and add that to the MK.
