Feature request: hide settings widget in iPad-size screen view option

Hi,

On an iPad, I'm finding that the settings widget is too big and prevents me from reading the messages easily, as it makes it become much smaller.

Is it possible for a setting to be created that would allow me to hide this and access it from a button on the top toolbar (like the button that is visible in portrait mode), or some way to make it smaller?
