Support UnifiedPush on Android #554
Comments
I would like to push this too. I am using GrapheneOS and I DONT want to install g-play for Push. Pls provide support for alternative Push Systems like Unified Push so we can be independent from Google and decentralize the Internet too! |
I would very much like this as well, please. |

pushing this again @robbiehanson can you pls discuss this within phoenix? my message to you: Dear Phoenix Wallet Team, First of all, thank you for creating such an amazing wallet that empowers users with the freedom and sovereignty that Bitcoin stands for. Your commitment to decentralization is evident in your work, and I truly appreciate that. However, I’d like to really suggest and push an enhancement that aligns perfectly with the ethos of decentralization: integrating UnifiedPush as an alternative push notification provider alongside Google’s FCM. UnifiedPush is an open standard for push notifications that gives users the ability to choose their own notification service, offering greater privacy and control. This approach directly supports the principles of decentralization that Bitcoin embodies. Integrating UnifiedPush is not a difficult task—it provides a flexible API and excellent documentation for developers. Supporting it would empower users who want to break free from proprietary systems like FCM, further promoting privacy and independence in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Decentralization isn’t just about Bitcoin—it’s about rethinking the way we build systems and tools for the internet as a whole. By offering UnifiedPush as an option, Phoenix Wallet would lead the way in demonstrating how Bitcoin applications can extend these principles to all aspects of their architecture. Thank you for considering this proposal. It would be a powerful step toward decentralizing the internet and ensuring true user sovereignty. Looking forward to your thoughts! Best regards, |
UnifiedPush is a protocol used in apps like Amethyst and Molly (Signal client fork) to send push notifications via a server that google doesn't control. Phoenix uses FCM currently for push notifications, but it would be awesome if it also shipped a FOSS build that uses UnifiedPush instead of FCM.
